A Dry Year Calls for Smart Action

May 16, 2025

Southern Utah is in the middle of one of its driest water years on record. Flows in the Virgin River are extremely low, and the region is preparing to rely almost completely on stored water in reservoirs this summer. Northern Nevada faces similar conditions, and water managers across both regions are urging residents and businesses to act now.

The Washington County Water Conservancy District recently shared tips to help reduce outdoor water use, which often makes up more than half of a household’s total water consumption. Their recommendations include switching to low-water landscaping, upgrading to smart irrigation controllers, and watering only when necessary and during cooler parts of the day.

How Smart Irrigation Helps

Upgrading to a smart irrigation controller is one of the most effective ways to save water without sacrificing the health of your landscape. These controllers adjust watering schedules based on weather, soil moisture, and plant needs. This means you use the right amount of water at the right time, not too much, not too little.

Calsense helps cities, schools, parks, and HOAs take water savings even further. Our smart irrigation solutions offer:

  • Automatic, weather-based scheduling
  • Real-time flow monitoring
  • Leak detection and alerts
  • Remote control from your phone or computer

Our customers often see immediate water savings. Plus, some local water agencies offer rebates when you upgrade to a smart controller.

Washington County is also hosting free workshops this May. These classes cover native plant landscaping, lawn care in dry climates, and tips for designing efficient irrigation systems. If you’re in the St. George area, visit www.wcwcd.gov/events to learn more and sign up.

This is a critical time for water conservation. Every step we take now can protect our communities, landscapes, and future.
